Short answer: Bariloche's weather changes with the seasons and from one day to the next. SMN climate normals for 1991–2020 show milder, relatively drier summers and the highest precipitation from May through August. Snow is more common in winter, but can also fall in autumn or spring. These are historical averages for Bariloche Airport, not a promise about your travel dates.

Bariloche brings lake, forest and mountains together over short distances. Conditions can differ between the airport, downtown, the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake and a mountain. A clear morning can turn windy or rainy; a hiking trip may even surprise you with cold weather or an out-of-season snowfall.

What is each season like in Bariloche?

Summer: December, January and February

This is the part of the year with the highest average daily temperatures and the least precipitation in the airport record. It can be a good time to consider walks, lake outings and afternoons outdoors. Wind, rain and chilly days are still possible, so bring a warm layer for mornings and evenings.

The shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake is inviting, and when conditions allow, you may enjoy time at the beach. Monthly averages cannot promise beach weather or swimming conditions; check the forecast and decide based on the day.

Autumn: March, April and May

Average temperatures gradually fall, while precipitation rises toward May. Forest foliage changes color, offering another way to enjoy the lake and woodland scenery, with quieter walks and indoor breaks if the weather shifts. March can feel very different from late May.

A cold front may bring snow in autumn, especially later in the season, but there is no guaranteed date or amount. SMN records include snow days at the airport before winter begins.

Winter: June, July and August

These are the coldest months on average and have the highest precipitation at the airport. Snow, rain, frost and clear days are all possible. The mountains and snowy scenery are a seasonal draw, but snow does not fall every day and conditions can differ between town, lakeshore and higher elevations.

If your trip depends on seeing snow or doing a specific activity, check current conditions before booking and again during your stay. It also helps to have alternatives for rainy or windy days.

Spring: September, October and November

Average highs climb and precipitation falls compared with winter, creating more opportunities to plan outdoor outings. Spring is still changeable: cold mornings, wind, sunshine and rain can alternate. Snow has also been recorded at the airport in spring, so keep warm clothing handy.

It is an appealing time to see the landscape come alive and walk in milder weather than midwinter, while staying flexible enough to adjust plans to the day's forecast.

When is the rainiest time of year?

At Bariloche Airport, May through August average about 525.7 mm of precipitation, roughly 65% of the 812.5 mm annual total in the 1991–2020 record. June has the highest monthly average, at 168.3 mm. “Precipitation” is the useful term because cold-month totals can include rain or snow; the SMN table does not separate them by type.

This pattern summarizes many years, not the weather during your visit. Terrain also creates local differences: a mountain may have different conditions from the lakeshore or the airport.

When does it snow in Bariloche?

Snow is observed more often in winter. SMN normals show an average of 5.8 days with snow in June, 7.4 in July and 5.9 in August at the airport. Snow days also occur in autumn and spring: the averages include 1.4 days in May, 2.8 in September and 1.5 in October.

A “day with snow” means snowfall was observed at that station; it does not tell you how much accumulated, how long it lasted or what conditions were like at a mountain resort. None of these averages guarantees that you will see snow on a particular date, even in July.

When are clear skies more common?

At Bariloche Airport, the SMN records an average of 14.3 clear-sky days in January and 14.0 in February, compared with 3.1 in June and 4.5 in July. “Clear sky” measures cloud cover, not hours of sunshine; the sun can also appear between clouds. The climate record used here does not provide comparable sunshine-hour totals for this station.

How to plan for changeable weather

  • Dress in layers year-round; add warm and waterproof clothing based on the season and forecast.
  • Leave room to shift lake, trail or mountain plans if wind or precipitation changes.
  • Before heading out, check the SMN forecast and alerts for San Carlos de Bariloche (select the locality), and check conditions for the specific place you plan to visit.
  • For rainy-day ideas with children, see our guide to Bariloche with kids on rainy days.
